GEAR UP : Robotics
The GEAR UP Robotics program is an exciting way to teach children science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The middle school program is spearheaded by Dr. Douglas Williams, who is the director of the Center for Innovative Learning and Assessment Technologies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Dr. Williams uses Mindstorms lego education system to allow students to work as scientists and engineers in project-based learning environments. Students join after school robotics clubs at their GEAR UP schools and work with math or science teachers, UL students, and Dr. Williams to learn about robot design and coding. The teams compete in local contests with the goal of qualifying for advanced competitions.
