H.E.A.T. : Hands-on Exposure to Algebraic Topics

H.E.A.T. is a math program designed and implemented by UL Lafayette Department Head of Curriculum & Instruction and Associate Professor, Dr. Peter Sheppard. The goal of the H.E.A.T. program is to better prepare students for entry into post-secondary education.

The H.E.A.T. Program

The program focuses specifically on advancing student-participants knowledge of math and teacher-participants pedagogy associated with ideal mathematics teaching. The program is implemented through the use of mentoring clusters. Those clusters are made up of GEAR UP students, GEAR UP teachers, and UL Lafayette prospective teachers.

Clusters are designed to foster a culture of mathematics excellence in students who participate in an after school club which meets 16 hours a semester to engage in topics that are closely related to state and national standards in advanced algebraic problem solving.

These problem solving topics are linked to college mathematics coursework and national standardized measures of mathematics achievement such as PSAT, SAT, and ACT preparation.

At the end of each semester, schools send a team of students to compete in a district-wide competition. Each student will take an individual assessment to rank for competition awards and compete as a part of their school team in a bracket style tournament to name a top H.E.A.T. team.
